Managing Your Notifications
Vacua gives you fine-grained control over what you're notified about. This guide explains every notification setting so you can find the right balance between staying informed and avoiding interruptions.

Notification levels
Every server and channel can be set to one of three levels:
| Level | When you get notified |
|---|---|
| All Messages | Every single message posted in that server or channel |
| Only @Mentions | Only when someone @mentions you, @everyone, or @here |
| Nothing | No notifications whatsoever (the channel is still readable) |
The default for most servers is Only @Mentions.

Setting per-server notification preferences
- Right-click the server icon in the left sidebar.
- Select Notification Settings.
- Choose your preferred level from the dropdown.
- You can also toggle Suppress @everyone and @here if a server is noisy.
Per-channel overrides
You can override the server-level setting for individual channels:
- Right-click any channel in the left panel.
- Select Notification Settings.
- Choose All Messages, Only @Mentions, or Nothing.
Channel-level settings always take priority over the server default. This is useful for muting a high-traffic channel while still getting pinged in quieter ones.

Do Not Disturb mode
Do Not Disturb (DND) suppresses all desktop and mobile notifications until you turn it off.
To enable DND:
- Click your avatar at the bottom-left of the screen.
- Click Do Not Disturb (or set it to a timed duration: 30 min, 1 hour, 4 hours, etc.).
While in DND, a red dot appears on your avatar. You'll still see the red badge count on the app icon, but no sounds or pop-ups will appear.

Mobile push notifications
Vacua sends push notifications to the Vacua mobile app. You can control what triggers a push:
- In the mobile app, go to User Settings → Notifications.
- Toggle which events trigger a push: messages, mentions, friend requests, calls.
- You can also enable Notification Preview to show message content in the lock screen notification (or disable it for privacy).
Quiet hours (mobile)
Set a quiet hours window in the mobile notification settings to automatically suppress notifications overnight.

@everyone and @here mentions
- @everyone — notifies every member of the server regardless of their online status.
- @here — notifies only members who are currently online.
Both can be very disruptive. As a member:
- Go to the server's Notification Settings and enable Suppress @everyone and @here.
As a server admin:
- Restrict who can use these mentions via Server Settings → Roles → Permissions → Mention @everyone, @here, and All Roles.
Muting a server or channel
Muting prevents the server or channel from showing an unread indicator or badge. It's different from setting notifications to "Nothing" — muted channels still appear but stay greyed out.
To mute:
- Right-click the server or channel.
- Select Mute and choose a duration (1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, until re-enabled).
Desktop notification sounds
Control notification sounds in User Settings → Notifications:
- Toggle individual sounds: message notifications, mentions, DM calls, incoming DMs
- Adjust notification volume separately from media volume
Tips for cleaner notification hygiene
- Leave servers you're not active in rather than muting — it reduces clutter
- Set high-traffic announcement channels to Nothing — you'll read them when you visit
- Use per-channel overrides for channels where every message matters (support, alerts)
- Enable Only @Mentions as a global default and opt-in to All Messages only where needed
